Note: These Terms apply to sales of goods newly concluded on or
after June 1, 2026. Purchases made on or before May 31, 2026 are
governed by the previous Terms and Conditions.
Article 1. Definitions
- In these Terms, "Company" means IKEA Japan K.K., a company
incorporated under the laws of Japan. Group companies and affiliates
in Japan or overseas are not included. - "Online and Other Shopping Services" means services through which
the Company receives orders from customers and sells goods via the
online store, shopping app, telephone, chat, web-conferencing
systems designated by the Company, or other distance-selling methods
operated by the Company. - "Goods" means products sold to customers by the Company through the
Online and Other Shopping Services. Products purchased from anyone
other than the Company, or purchased in person at a Company store,
are excluded. - "Combination Product" means a product consisting of multiple goods
that the Company has specified in advance as a particular
combination. - "Customer" means a user who intends to purchase, or has purchased,
goods from the Company through the Online and Other Shopping
Services.
Article 2. Application of These Terms
- These Terms apply to all contracts for the sale of goods between the
Company and customers using the Online and Other Shopping Services. - The Company accepts purchase applications made through the Online
and Other Shopping Services on the condition that these Terms apply.
By applying to purchase goods through those services, the customer
is deemed to have agreed to and accepted these Terms without
objection. - The Customer Terms of Use (General Terms and Conditions) also apply
between the Company and the customer. If those terms conflict with
these Terms in relation to the Online and Other Shopping Services,
these Terms prevail. For purposes of applying the Customer Terms of
Use (General Terms and Conditions) to the Online and Other Shopping
Services, "purchase date" shall mean the date of purchase (or, where
payment and delivery occur on different dates, the date of
delivery).
Article 3. Applications to Purchase Goods Through the Online and Other Shopping Services
- To purchase goods through the Company's online store or shopping
app, customers must enter the required information on the relevant
application screen in accordance with the prescribed method and
procedures. To purchase by telephone, chat, or web-conferencing
system, customers must follow the instructions of the Company's
representative. These steps are referred to as the "Purchase
Application Procedure." - During the Purchase Application Procedure, the customer must choose
either delivery to an area served by the Online and Other Shopping
Services as designated by the Company ("Delivery") or collection at
a Company store in Japan that supports the Online and Other Shopping
Services ("Store Collection"). - Minors must obtain the consent of a parent, guardian, or person
exercising parental authority before applying to purchase goods. - When purchasing through the online store or shopping app and
selecting Delivery, all of the following conditions must be met for
the purchase application to be valid. If any condition is not met,
the Company may not accept the application and no sales contract
will be formed on the basis of that application:- The total price of the goods applied for must be at least JPY
1,000, excluding consumption tax. - The quantity of each item must be at least the minimum quantity
specified for that item. - The goods must not be designated by the Company as ineligible
for delivery (for example, fragile goods).
- The total price of the goods applied for must be at least JPY
- When purchasing through the online store or shopping app and
selecting Store Collection, both of the following conditions must be
met for the purchase application to be valid. If either condition is
not met, the Company may not accept the application and no sales
contract will be formed:- The quantity of each item must be at least the minimum quantity
specified for that item. - The goods must not be designated by the Company as ineligible
for delivery (for example, fragile goods).
- The quantity of each item must be at least the minimum quantity
Article 4. Payment of the Purchase Price
After completing the Purchase Application Procedure, the customer must
take the steps required to pay the amount specified by the Company using
a payment method designated by the Company ("Payment Procedure").
Article 5. Purchase Acceptance Email and Formation of the Sales Contract
- After the customer completes the Purchase Application Procedure and
Payment Procedure on the online store or shopping app, the Company
will send an email accepting the customer's purchase offer
("Purchase Acceptance Email"). The sales contract between the
Company and the customer is formed when the Purchase Acceptance
Email reaches the customer. Before sending that email, the Company
may send emails confirming that an application was made or its
details, asking questions about the application, or requesting
corrections or additional information. Such emails do not constitute
a Purchase Acceptance Email and do not create a sales contract. If
the Company ships the goods without sending a Purchase Acceptance
Email, the sales contract is formed when the goods are dispatched. - If the customer completes the Purchase Application Procedure with a
Company representative by telephone, chat, or web-conferencing
system, the Company will subsequently send a Purchase Acceptance
Email and, for credit-card payments only, a payment-instructions
email. The sales contract is formed when the Purchase Acceptance
Email reaches the customer. The customer must make payment in
accordance with the representative's instructions, the Purchase
Acceptance Email, the payment-instructions email, or any separate
instructions from the representative. If payment is not made by the
due date, the sales contract automatically lapses. If the goods
described in the Purchase Acceptance Email differ from the goods the
customer requested during the Purchase Application Procedure, no
sales contract is formed. - Even if the customer completes the Purchase Application Procedure,
the Company may be unable to accept the purchase application. In
that case, the Company has no legal obligation to procure or reserve
the goods, pay damages, or assume any other legal responsibility. - If, after sending the Purchase Acceptance Email or completion of the
Payment Procedure, the Company discovers that the goods are out of
stock, or reasonably determines that the purchase may involve
fraud---such as impersonation or fraudulent payment---or other
improper conduct contrary to applicable law or the Company's terms,
the Company may rescind the sales contract retroactively.
Article 6. Dispatch and Delivery of Goods; Transfer of Ownership
- If the customer selects Delivery, after the amount specified by the
Company has been paid in accordance with the Payment Procedure, the
Company will dispatch the goods to the delivery location entered
during the Purchase Application Procedure ("Designated Delivery
Location") and deliver them there. Fees already paid will not be
refunded if the customer changes the scheduled delivery date or time
slot for reasons attributable to the customer. - If the customer selects Store Collection, after the amount specified
by the Company has been paid, the Company will hand over the goods
at the Company store entered during the Purchase Application
Procedure or communicated to the Company's representative
("Designated Store") on the collection date entered or communicated
during that procedure ("Scheduled Collection Date"). - Ownership of goods sold by the Company transfers from the Company to
the customer when the goods are handed over at the Designated
Delivery Location or Designated Store. - Until delivery under the preceding paragraph is complete, the
Company bears the risk of loss, damage, or other harm to the goods,
except where attributable to the customer. After delivery is
complete, the customer bears that risk, except where attributable to
the Company. However, even before delivery is complete, the customer
bears the risk of loss, damage, or other harm: (1) for Delivery,
from the time the goods are returned to the Company by the carrier
engaged by the Company because the customer did not receive them at
the Designated Delivery Location; and (2) for Store Collection, from
the day after the Scheduled Collection Date if the customer does not
collect the goods at the Designated Store on that date. - If goods are returned to the Company by its carrier because the
customer did not receive them at the Designated Delivery Location,
or if the customer does not collect goods at the Designated Store
within three days after the Scheduled Collection Date, the customer
must pay the Company liquidated damages equivalent to a storage fee
of JPY 500 per day from the scheduled collection/receipt date until
actual receipt, as well as compensation for any damage suffered by
the Company. - If goods are returned to the Company by its carrier because the
customer did not receive them at the Designated Delivery Location,
or if the customer fails to collect goods at the Designated Store
within three days after the Scheduled Collection Date, the sales
contract automatically lapses. This does not prevent the Company
from claiming the liquidated damages described in the preceding
paragraph (calculated from the scheduled receipt date until the date
the contract lapses) and compensation for damages. - If goods cannot be brought into the Designated Delivery Location
because of access-route constraints, or if it is discovered after
delivery that special handling procedures and costs are required,
the Company will accept a request to cancel the sales contract and
refund the purchase price. Fees specified by the Company will not be
refunded.
Article 7. Refunds and Returns Where Goods Have No Defects
- Even if purchased goods have no defects or malfunctions, the
customer may cancel the sales contract---and, after receiving the
goods, request a return and refund---within one year from the date
the sales contract is formed, provided that all of the following
requirements are met. Otherwise, the customer may not request
cancellation, return, or a refund. Even if the customer requests
cancellation before receiving the goods, the carrier engaged by the
Company may not be able to stop delivery, depending on when the
request is made. If delivery cannot be stopped, the customer will
bear the procedures and costs required to return the goods.- The goods must be eligible for return. Excluded goods include
resale items from the furniture buy-back service, outlet goods
more than 14 days after purchase, replacement goods supplied or
exchanged as substitutes, certain mattresses that have been
tried and are more than 90 days past the purchase date, modified
goods, and IKEA digital gift cards. - The goods must be unused: unopened, or opened but accepted by
the Company as being in like-new condition. - All parts, components, and materials supplied with the goods
must be present. - The customer must present documentation designated by the
Company proving the purchase and purchase date, such as the
original receipt, receipt/delivery statement, or purchase
history available on the Company's website, except as described
in paragraph 4. - There must be no circumstances suggesting that the purchase or
return/refund request is socially unreasonable or inconsistent
with ordinary consumer use, such as purchasing for resale to
others, purchasing for business purposes, or purchasing with an
intention to return the goods from the outset in a manner that
harms the Company's business. - The customer must not have made more than five return/refund
requests in the one-year period preceding the request. - The customer must not have requested returns/refunds for more
than 25 items in total during the one-year period preceding the
request. Items are counted according to the Company's sales
units; Combination Products count as one combination unit. - No single return/refund request may include more than five
opened items, including items accepted as being in like-new
condition. Items are counted according to the Company's sales
units; Combination Products count as one combination unit. - The cancellation request must not cause the purchase application
to cease meeting the conditions in Article 3, paragraphs 4 or 5.
- The goods must be eligible for return. Excluded goods include
- The customer may request an exchange or re-exchange for the same
product only by contacting the Company within 14 days from the
purchase date (or, if delivery service was used, the delivery
completion date) or the date the replacement item was received, and
only if all of the following requirements are met. If an exchange
for the same product is difficult for unavoidable reasons, such as
insufficient stock, the Company will exchange it for an equivalent
product with a price adjustment or refund the price.- The customer must remain an IKEA Family member continuously from
the purchase date until receipt of the exchanged item. - The Company must determine that the goods were damaged during
transport or assembly despite the customer having no intentional
misconduct or gross negligence. - The goods must be eligible for exchange. Excluded goods include
resale items from the furniture buy-back service, outlet goods,
modified goods (including goods the Company determines were
modified during assembly or attempted assembly), and IKEA
digital gift cards.
- There must be no circumstances suggesting that the purchase or
return/refund request is socially unreasonable or inconsistent
with ordinary consumer use, such as purchasing for resale,
purchasing for business purposes, or purchasing with an
intention to return the goods from the outset in a manner that
harms the Company's business. - The request must not fall within any case in which a
return/refund is prohibited under paragraph 1.
- The customer must remain an IKEA Family member continuously from
- If all requirements in paragraph 1 are met, the Company will refund
the purchase price. If the customer has received the goods
(including where the carrier's delivery could not be stopped), the
goods must first have been returned. Fees specified by the Company
will not be refunded, and the customer bears the costs of processing
the refund. Refunds will generally be made by cancelling the
relevant debit-card, credit-card, electronic-money, or QR-code
payment, or, for prepaid-card payments, by issuing a return card
designated by the Company. If the relevant payment cannot be
cancelled for system-related reasons, a return card will be issued.
If the Company determines that issuing a return card is difficult,
the refund will be made by another method the Company considers
appropriate. - Regardless of the refund methods in the preceding paragraph, refunds
for opened goods accepted as being in like-new condition, food, and
cut-to-size goods (such as custom-made worktops and fabric) will be
made by issuing a return card designated by the Company. The Company
may, at its discretion, allow a return even if the customer cannot
provide the specified proof of purchase under paragraph 1(4) and the
Company cannot verify the purchase history. In that case, the lowest
selling price at which the Company sold the goods during the
preceding year will be treated as the purchase price, and the refund
will be made by issuing a return card designated by the Company. - Refunds under paragraph 2 will follow the method set out in the
preceding paragraph (a refund by issuance of a return card
designated by the Company). - The Company will designate the location to which goods must be
returned. The customer bears the procedures and costs required to
return the goods.
Article 8. Repair or Refund Where Goods Are Defective
If purchased goods have defects or malfunctions, the matter will be
handled in accordance with Article 12 of the Customer Terms of Use
(General Terms and Conditions). However, for the procedures described in
Article 12, paragraph 4 of those terms, visiting a store is not
necessarily required; other methods designated by the Company may be
used.
Article 9. Limitation of Liability
Unless the Company has acted intentionally or with gross negligence, its
liability for damages arising from breach of contract, tort, or similar
grounds will be limited to the higher of the purchase price of the goods
purchased by the customer or JPY 50,000. Such liability does not include
lost profits or other hypothetical/indirect losses, or special damages
arising from particular circumstances.
Article 10. Customer Obligations and Responsibilities
- Customers must comply with the following:
- During the Purchase Application Procedure, accurately enter or
communicate the goods they wish to purchase and the requested
delivery location. - Since access and delivery requirements vary by location, check
that the goods' dimensions and the delivery route are suitable
before applying to purchase. Particular care should be taken
when purchasing large furniture. - Promptly receive goods when they are delivered.
- Select goods and assemble and install purchased goods at their
own responsibility. - Before assembling, installing, or using goods, check in advance
that the environment is suitable. Examples include checking for
color transfer onto floors or furniture from products placed on
them; color transfer from textiles to other clothing or
household items; and the suitability, strength, and durability
of walls, floors, and ceilings for products installed on them. - Observe all precautions and instructions for using the goods.
- Do not purchase goods for resale to others, purchase goods with
the intention from the outset of returning them or obtaining a
refund in a manner that harms the Company's business, or engage
in any other socially unreasonable purchasing, use, return, or
refund conduct not ordinarily undertaken by consumers in daily
life. The Company sells goods on the assumption that customers
will purchase, use, return, and request refunds in ways
ordinarily expected of consumers in their daily lives. - Properly manage, at their own responsibility, their registered
ID, password, membership information, credit-card information
stored on their membership page, and other such information. - Do not engage in acts that infringe, or may infringe, the
trademarks, copyrights, privacy, or other rights or interests of
other users, third parties, or the Company.
- During the Purchase Application Procedure, accurately enter or
- If a customer breaches these obligations, the Company may claim
damages and seek an injunction to stop the breach. - If a customer suffers damage as a result of the customer's own
breach of obligations, the Company cannot entertain a claim for
damages or similar relief from the customer. This does not apply to
damage caused by the Company. - If information described in paragraph 1(8) may have been disclosed
to a third party or used without authorization, the customer must
immediately notify the Company and follow its instructions.
Article 11. Force Majeure, Disclaimer, and Communications
- If an email fails to reach the other party because of circumstances
beyond the parties' control, such as a network or telephone-line
failure, and as a result a sales contract is not formed or lapses;
if payment is not made by the prescribed deadline because of
circumstances beyond the customer's control, such as an error by a
credit-card company or financial institution, and as a result a
sales contract is not formed or lapses; if goods cannot be delivered
on the scheduled date because of circumstances beyond the Company's
control, such as an earthquake, tsunami, or transport disruption; or
if an obligation otherwise cannot be performed for reasons beyond a
party's control, neither the Company nor the customer will bear
legal liability, including liability for damages, to the other
party. - If a Purchase Acceptance Email sent by the Company does not reach
the customer, or is delayed, due to circumstances beyond the
parties' control, such as a network or telephone-line failure, or
because information entered or communicated by the customer during
the Purchase Application Procedure was incorrect or changed, the
email will be deemed to have reached the customer when the Company
sent it.
Article 12. Place of Performance of the Company's Obligations to Customers
Unless otherwise provided in these Terms or specifically agreed between
the parties, where the Company owes the customer an obligation arising
from a sales contract, including an obligation to restore the status quo
or pay damages, the place of performance will be the Company store
closest to the customer's address.
Article 13. Governing Law and Jurisdiction
- The contractual relationship between the Company and the customer,
including these Terms, is governed by the laws of Japan. - The Tokyo District Court (or Tokyo Summary Court) or Osaka District
Court (or Osaka Summary Court) will have exclusive agreed
jurisdiction over disputes between the Company and the customer.
Article 14. Assignment of Rights
The customer may not assign to a third party any rights or obligations
arising under the sales contract.
Article 15. Personal Information
Personal information collected by the Company through the Online and
Other Shopping Services will be handled in accordance with the Company's
Privacy Policy.
Article 16. The Company's Unique Shopping Model and Rules of Interpretation
- The Company's business philosophy is to offer a wide range of
home-furnishing products combining excellent design and
functionality at the lowest prices practicable, so that more people
can purchase them. To achieve the aim of selling high-quality
products at low prices, the Company uses a unique shopping model
under which customers perform tasks they can reasonably carry out
themselves during the sales process, such as assembling products and
returning products when requesting a return or refund. - If any aspect of a sales contract between the Company and a customer
is not expressly provided for, or an interpretive doubt arises, the
principles underlying the Company's unique shopping model described
in the preceding paragraph will supplement or guide interpretation
of the contract.
Article 17. Amendments to These Terms
- The Company may amend these Terms where the amendment is reasonable
in light of the need for the change, the appropriateness of its
content, and other circumstances relating to the amendment, by
giving notice via the internet or other means of the fact of the
amendment, its content, and the effective date of the amended Terms. - In such cases, from the effective date, the provisions of these
Terms incorporated into sales contracts and other agreements between
the Company and customers will be amended to reflect the revised
Terms.
